So Jesus enters into the full swing of his ministry at thirty years old and he starts telling everyone:
“Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand” Matthew 4:17.
I imagine everyone looking at him with raised eyebrows. Elbowing each other in sarcasm- “Look at this guy!” This Jesus the Nazarene is going around telling people to “repent”. Actually he’s saying something in Aramaic…a word scholars believe sounds like
Tubu
We get the word repent from the greek translation which uses the word
Metanoeo
Tubu = Metanoeo = Repent
Someone once explained to me that repentance is asking forgiveness of your sins and never doing them again. Sound familiar?
The problem with this is not that it is a lie, it’s just incomplete. The most important part of repentance actually makes the asking forgiveness easier. It makes the “never doing them again” possible.
If you take the word Metanoeo and break it down you have two parts: Meta and Noeo,
Meta derives from the Greek language meaning “among, with, after, change.”
Noeo derives also from the Greek Language and means to “think, understand”
If we do this we see that Metanoeo means – to change your thoughts or understanding.
Change the way you think for the Kingdom of God is at hand.
What does changing your thoughts have to do with sin?
You have to think about an action before you do it right? If only for a split second?
Naturally, If we change our thoughts we change our actions.
Maybe in order to repent we need to change the way we think about ourselves and God. I know from experience that the process of changing my thoughts is a continual duty. Maybe the process of repentance is also continual. I believe that once we change our thoughts about God and look toward Him for help it gives God the room he needs to give us His Spirit to mold us into the people he has always wanted us to be.
Maybe the first thing we should do is to change our thoughts about God.
Believe that He just might be who He says he is.
Believe that He just might be able to change everything about us.
Believe that He loves us for who we are.
Then we will want to apologize for our sin and
we just might mean it.
Believe in Him because His kingdom is right at your fingertips…
