Recently, My wife and I have been pointed in the direction of a christian organization called World Relief. I have emailed the volunteer coordinator here in Jacksonville and we are going to set up a time in the next 2 weeks to meet and discuss the needs of the organization in Jacksonville.
We have learned so far that there are nearly 300 political and religious refugees entering Jacksonville per year. These people have waited a minimum of five years in refugee camps in the oppressive environment of their country.
When an opening comes up in a country they are sent to the UN for questioning then to the destination country’s state department for further questioning and processing into amnesty. Most of them set foot in Jacksonville for the first time at the airport and this is where World Relief comes in…
World relief picks up the refugees from the Airport and finds them housing, first temporary housing given by volunteers and then permanent housing for the refugees. All throughout this process are wonderful opportunities to share Christ with people from Burundi, Burma, Iraq, Afghanistan and more. One can teach a refugee English or job skills, provide care packages, transportation or even a home cooked meal, ultimately for a chance to lead these children of God back to the Lord!
